How to put a break on your employee’s smart phone addiction during work?

Are you an employer tired of your employees who use their cell phone at work all the time? Is this technological advancement decreasing the productivity of your staff? People these days are so addicted to these devices that they want it in front of their eyes all the time. Even if there is no notification, they feel the urge to check it in between frequent intervals, which is not acceptable during the working hours. As some of the offices use mobile apps as part of their day-to-day operation, it is not possible to put a total ban on its operation. But the upgrade of technology can create problems in people’s psychology and can become a productivity-killer. However, you can teach your employee to be more responsible when it comes to the use of mobile phones and encourage them to focus on their work. A sense of responsibility can curb their irresponsible use.

The hiring process may be a great time to screen out prospective people who have issues with controlling their use of this addictive gadget. You may figure out if your prospective employee has an uncontrollable urge to glance at his/her phone by observing his activities during the hiring process. If a deserving candidate does have such issues, you can ask them if they can work on their distractions or prioritize the given tasks at hand and finish it on time. However, employers must also respect the privacy of their employees and allow urgent communications and emergencies to a reasonable extent.

Long and continuous working hours can be boring, monotonous and counterproductive to the employees. Hence, it is important to allow the employees to take short breaks so that they can give their brains a rest and revive their energy allowing them to work better. Employers need to be mindful of the fact that strict restrictions on using their phones tempt the employees to take sneak peeks at their phones while at the same time fearing that their boss might catch them red handed which causes more distraction. Hence, it is okay to give employees the time to recharge themselves while also making sure they do not make a mockery of the liberty given to them. Result and performance oriented appraisal of their work is the best way to ensure a win-win situation between the employees and employers. It is also good to fix a certain time for them to freely use their phones like the lunch break time which can be also be harmonized with fun-filled activities that can increase productivity.

Also, sometimes when employees face confusion related to their work or when they are unsure of what to do next, they may seek creative solutions with the help of different features or applications on their phone but they get distracted by the notification that pop up on their screen. To avoid distraction, make sure you give them clear directions and guidelines so they can set the goal for themselves and also provide them regular feedback. This will keep them more engaged, focused and motivated towards their work rather than towards other things. Acknowledge their work and praise them for their achievement so that they will be motivated to work harder. It is important to teach them the skills to have control over their own addiction and use technology to their advantage.
